Where the Indiana Auto Market Stands

Indiana auto insurance sits in the lower-cost tier nationally — our cost map benchmarks the state around $1,300 per year for full coverage, well below coastal and no-fault markets. That baseline does not mean every renewal feels cheap: repair costs, medical inflation on bodily injury claims, and prior-year loss experience still move individual premiums at renewal.

The SERFF filings we reviewed for Indiana personal auto show a split market. Branch and both State Farm personal-auto entities filed rate decreases. Several large carriers filed rule or symbol updates that did not change the overall rate level — a filing notice is not always a price change.

Use the grid below for market context, not as a quote. Your driving record, vehicle, territory, and limits still drive the number you actually pay. For Indiana minimum limits and UM/UIM requirements, see our Indiana car insurance guide. For home filings in the same state, see our Indiana home insurance rate tracker.

Why Rates Are Moving

Branch's -19.0% overall rate level change is the largest confirmed cut in this Indiana auto snapshot. That magnitude signals competitive new-business pricing — the same pattern we have seen in Ohio and Wisconsin when a carrier's loss ratio allows them to chase share after a hard market cycle.

State Farm filed separate decreases for its mutual (-4.2%) and fire & casualty (-4.6%) personal auto entities. Treat those as modest relief, not a headline cut — many Indiana drivers with State Farm will see smaller net movement once territory, vehicle, and driver-level factors apply.

Nationwide, Progressive, Liberty Mutual/Safeco, and GEICO all had Indiana SERFF activity in the search window, but the filings were rule, underwriting, or vehicle-symbol updates — not overall rate decreases or increases. Symbol and tier changes can move individual premiums without a published overall rate level change.

Farmers has a rate filing in progress with new-business effective August 16, 2026 and renewal effective September 18, 2026. We have not yet located the overall percentage in supporting documentation — this row will update when the Proposed Rate Change memo is confirmed.

Clearcover had no Indiana personal auto rate filings in our SERFF search. That does not mean Clearcover is unavailable in Indiana — only that no rate-level filing appeared in the window we searched.

What This Means for Indiana Drivers

If your renewal is coming up and you have been with the same carrier for three or more years, this is a reasonable window to shop — especially if you are not with Branch or State Farm and absorbed prior increases without a comparative quote. The carriers cutting overall rates are doing so to win business; renewal pricing often lags new-business pricing.

Insurance Geek quotes through appointed P&C carriers — Travelers, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual, Clearcover, Branch, Openly, and Steadily. The tracker grid may include State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, and Farmers because those filings are public market intelligence, not because we bind every brand on the list.

Rate filings for all carriers are public record through SERFF Filing Access.

FAQ

What to Do If You Have a Indiana Auto Renewal Coming

  • Don't auto-renew without shopping — auto filings happen faster and spread further than most drivers realize.
  • Mid-term cancellation is usually fine for auto. Don't wait for renewal if a better option is available today.
  • Credit-based pricing has moved in most states — if your credit has improved, re-run your quote.
