New Jersey is a no-fault state. Every driver must carry personal injury protection (PIP), which covers your own medical expenses regardless of who caused the accident. New Jersey offers two policy types: the Basic Policy (minimum coverage) and the Standard Policy (broader protection). The Basic Policy minimum liability is 15/30/5; the Standard Policy minimum is 15/30/5 but allows higher limits.

New Jersey Minimum Coverage Requirements

CoverageMinimum Required
Bodily injury liability (per person)$15,000
Bodily injury liability (per accident)$30,000
Property damage liability$5,000
Personal injury protection (PIP)$15,000
Uninsured motorist bodily injury (per person)$15,000
Uninsured motorist bodily injury (per accident)$30,000

Expert Tip: Don't Choose the Basic Policy to Save Money

Basic Policy note: The Basic Policy has no BI liability requirement (BI is optional) and only $5,000 in property damage. It is the cheapest option but provides minimal protection if you cause an accident.

Most drivers should choose the Standard Policy with higher limits. The Basic Policy leaves you personally liable for bodily injury claims if you cause an accident.

What's Required vs. Optional

Required (Standard Policy):

  • Bodily injury liability (BI) — Pays for injuries you cause to others. Does not cover you or your passengers.
  • Property damage liability (PD) — Covers damage you cause to another person's vehicle or property.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP) — New Jersey mandates PIP, covering your own medical expenses and lost wages regardless of fault. See our PIP coverage guide.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) — Required on the Standard Policy. See our UM/UIM guide.

Not required but worth considering:

  • Collision — Covers damage to your own vehicle from a crash. Required by most lenders. See collision coverage.
  • Comprehensive — Covers non-collision losses: theft, weather, animal strikes, vandalism. See comprehensive coverage.

Proof of Insurance & Vehicle Registration

New Jersey requires proof of insurance at registration and at any traffic stop. Acceptable proof includes:

  • Insurance ID card (physical or digital)
  • Policy declarations page

New Jersey uses an electronic verification system. Insurers report policy status to the state, so a lapse can trigger a notice even without a traffic stop.

SR-22: If your license is suspended for an insurance violation or certain driving offenses, New Jersey may require an SR-22 certificate of financial responsibility. SR-22 requirements typically last three years.

Penalties for Driving Uninsured

ViolationConsequence
First offense$300–$1,000 fine; license suspension; community service
Subsequent offensesHigher fines; extended suspension; possible vehicle impoundment
Driving on suspended licenseAdditional criminal penalties

Reinstating your license requires proof of insurance and payment of all applicable fees.

Cost of Car Insurance in New Jersey

New Jersey's average annual premium runs above the national average — roughly $1,600–$2,000 per year for full coverage, depending on driver profile and ZIP code. Newark, Jersey City, and the northern suburbs near New York City typically see the highest rates in the state.

Rates vary most by:

  • Policy type — Basic vs. Standard Policy affects both coverage and premium significantly.
  • Driving record — At-fault accidents and major violations raise premiums significantly.
  • Location — Northern NJ near NYC sees higher rates than South Jersey.
  • Vehicle — Financed vehicles require collision and comprehensive.

New Jersey's Basic Policy can look attractive on price, but it leaves you without bodily injury liability by default — meaning you're personally exposed if you injure someone.
