Louisiana is an at-fault (tort) state. The driver who causes an accident is responsible for the resulting injuries and property damage. Louisiana requires minimum liability coverage of 15/30/25 — among the lower minimums in the country — but consistently ranks as one of the most expensive states for car insurance due to high litigation rates, severe weather, and dense urban traffic.
Louisiana Minimum Coverage Requirements
| Coverage | Minimum Required |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability (per person) | $15,000 |
| Bodily injury liability (per accident) | $30,000 |
| Property damage liability | $25,000 |
Expert Tip: Carry Comprehensive — Especially in South Louisiana
Louisiana's weather risk is real. Hurricanes, tropical storms, and flooding can total a vehicle that was never in a collision. Comprehensive coverage pays for weather-related losses, and given Louisiana's exposure, it's worth carrying even on older vehicles. If you're in a flood-prone area, verify that your policy doesn't exclude flood damage — most standard comprehensive policies cover it.

UM/UIM note: Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is not required in Louisiana, but insurers must offer it. Rejecting it requires a written waiver.
What's Required vs. Optional
Required:
- Bodily injury liability (BI) — Pays for injuries you cause to others. Does not cover you or your passengers.
- Property damage liability (PD) — Covers damage you cause to another person's vehicle or property.
Not required but worth considering:
- UM/UIM — Not mandatory, but must be offered. Louisiana has a high rate of uninsured drivers, making this coverage especially valuable. See our UM/UIM guide.
- PIP / medical payments (MedPay) — Not required, but covers your own medical expenses after an accident regardless of fault. See our MedPay guide.
- Collision — Covers damage to your own vehicle from a crash. Required by most lenders. See collision coverage.
- Comprehensive — Covers non-collision losses: theft, hurricane damage, flooding, hail, and animal strikes. Especially valuable in Louisiana. See comprehensive coverage.
Proof of Insurance & Vehicle Registration
Louisiana requires proof of insurance at vehicle registration and at any traffic stop. Acceptable proof includes:
- Insurance ID card (physical or digital)
- Policy declarations page
Louisiana uses an electronic verification system (LMVIC). Insurers report policy status to the state, and a lapse can trigger a registration suspension even without a traffic stop.
SR-22: If your license is suspended for an insurance violation or certain driving offenses, Louisiana may require an SR-22 certificate of financial responsibility. SR-22 requirements typically last three years.
Penalties for Driving Uninsured
| Violation | Consequence |
|---|---|
| First offense | $500–$1,000 fine; license suspension; vehicle impoundment |
| Subsequent offenses | Higher fines; extended suspension |
| Driving on suspended license | Additional criminal penalties |
Reinstating your license requires proof of insurance and payment of all applicable fees.
Cost of Car Insurance in Louisiana
Louisiana is one of the most expensive states for car insurance in the country. Average annual premiums for full coverage run roughly $2,000–$2,800 per year, depending on driver profile and ZIP code. New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and the surrounding parishes typically see the highest rates.
High costs are driven by:
- Litigation environment — Louisiana's legal system is plaintiff-friendly, leading to higher claim payouts.
- Weather exposure — Hurricanes, flooding, and hail generate frequent comprehensive claims.
- Driving record — At-fault accidents and major violations raise premiums significantly.
- Location — Urban parishes see higher rates than rural north Louisiana.
