Alabama requires every driver to carry liability insurance before registering or operating a vehicle on public roads. The state minimum is 25/50/25 — $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. Alabama is an at-fault state, so the driver who causes an accident is responsible for the other party's damages.
Alabama Minimum Coverage Requirements
| Coverage | Minimum Required |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability (per person) | $25,000 |
| Bodily injury liability (per accident) | $50,000 |
| Property damage liability | $25,000 |
| Uninsured motorist (BI) | Not required |
| Personal injury protection (PIP) | Not required |
Expert Tip: Don't Stop at the State Minimum
Alabama's 25/50/25 minimum sounds adequate until you consider that a single hospitalization can exceed $100,000. If you cause a serious accident and your BI limit is $25,000 per person, you're personally liable for the rest. We recommend at least 100/300/100 for most drivers — and adding UM/UIM given how many uninsured drivers are on Alabama roads.

These limits apply to all private passenger vehicles registered in Alabama. Motorcycles, commercial vehicles, and fleet vehicles may have different requirements.
What's Required vs. Optional
Required:
- Bodily injury liability (BI) — Pays for injuries you cause to others. Does not cover you or your passengers.
- Property damage liability (PD) — Covers damage you cause to another person's vehicle or property.
Not required but worth considering:
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) — Alabama does not mandate UM coverage, but roughly 19% of Alabama drivers are uninsured (one of the highest rates in the country). Without it, you pay out of pocket if an uninsured driver hits you. See our UM/UIM coverage guide for details.
- Personal injury protection (PIP) / MedPay — Alabama is a tort (at-fault) state with no PIP mandate. MedPay is available as an add-on and covers your medical bills regardless of fault.
- Collision — Covers damage to your own vehicle from a crash. Required by most lenders if you finance or lease.
- Comprehensive — Covers non-collision losses: theft, weather, animal strikes, vandalism. Also typically required by lenders.
The state minimum is the legal floor, not a recommended coverage level. Most agents suggest at least 100/300/100 to protect against serious accidents.
Proof of Insurance & Vehicle Registration
Alabama's Mandatory Liability Insurance (MLI) Law requires proof of insurance at registration and at any traffic stop. Acceptable proof includes:
- Insurance ID card (physical or digital)
- Policy declarations page
Alabama uses an electronic verification system. Insurers report policy status to the state, so a lapse can trigger a notice even without a traffic stop.
SR-22: If your license is suspended for an insurance violation or certain driving offenses, Alabama may require an SR-22 certificate of financial responsibility filed by your insurer. SR-22 requirements typically last three years.
Penalties for Driving Uninsured
| Violation | Consequence |
|---|---|
| First offense | License/registration suspension; $200 reinstatement fee |
| Second offense within 3 years | $400 reinstatement fee |
| Subsequent offenses | $600 reinstatement fee |
Reinstating your license requires proof of insurance and payment of the reinstatement fee. Alabama does not currently impound vehicles for first-offense uninsured driving, but the suspension itself prevents legal operation.
Cost of Car Insurance in Alabama
Alabama's average annual premium runs below the national average — roughly $1,200–$1,500 per year for full coverage, depending on the driver profile and ZIP code. Minimum-only liability is considerably less.
Rates vary most by:
- Driving record — At-fault accidents and major violations (DUI, reckless driving) raise premiums significantly.
- Location — Metro areas like Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile see higher rates than rural counties.
- Vehicle — Financed vehicles require collision and comprehensive, which increases total premium.
- Age — Teen drivers typically pay 2–3× the adult average.
Alabama does allow credit history as a rating factor, which can affect your premium in either direction.
